Treatment of advanced chronic periodontal disease can be a minefield for todays general dental practitioner. The more we know about perio, the more we understand about it’s unpredictability. Patients who have suffered a gradual loss of periodontal attachment to a point where their BPE score demands further explanation and treatment can be difficult to manage.
At Albert Place Dental Referral Centre, we have devised a tried and tested treatment option, which we have now decided offer to our referring practices. The treatment starts with an information leaflet (supplied free of charge) explaining the situation to the patient and outlining possible ways to proceed. If the patient and GDP decide that further treatment would be appropriate then a referral can be made for a package of treatment, which assumes that the diagnosis of chronic periodontal disease has already been made.
